Hi All,

Hoping you can help as I'm out of ideas on this.

I've a Specialised Sirrus which I use to commute. For the last few months it's mean making a really irritating creaking noise which I believe is coming from the seatpost. Reasons are that it's not in time with a wheel, crank or chain turn, and it stops when I stand up.

I've replaced the saddle, seatpost and cleaned and greased everything in that area about 4 times. When I do grease it, the noise stops for about 1 ride then comes back.

It's driving me mad! I know it shouldn't but it really impacts my enjoyment or riding, and I'm actually considering a new bike just to get rid of it!!

Any help/suggestions in identifying and resolving this much appreciated.

Pedals? Cleat and pedal interface?

It's not always coming from where you think.

My carbon Defy developed a knocking noise not long after buying it. I feared it was the BB, but it wasn't always in time with pedalling. It went away when I stood up, so I thought "ah ha! It's the seatpost".

Removed, cleaned, new carbon paste, reset. Noise was gone. "Sorted" I thought.

Noise came back the next ride.

I finally found it was the bottle cage on the downtube that was doing it. Remove, drop of grease in the screwholes, tighten back up. Noise gone.

Yours might be similar. Could be the saddle itself too.

Try removing stem clamp bolts, clean, grease & refit/torque. It is often a source of creaking as you pull on the bars without realising it

Mine seat post creak was cured by greasing the interface between the seat post clamp and frame.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
First check the cables crossing over in front of the headtube. They can make a really annoying noise that you'd swear was coming from somewhere important.

Many thanks all for your help with this.

Last night I tried the GT85 on the seat itself (long shot as that is new - post creak), then moved onto the downtube, greased the bottle screws and the front derailleur clamp (thought it was worth a try).

Confident it's not the stem or handlebar area as when I stand up and pull hard when pedaling it's silent.

Also confident it's not the pedals themselves, I have flat pedals as this is my commuter bike, and it's not in time with a rotation.

Still creaking this morning. Going to check the child's seat holder I have on the down tube tonight as MikeW's suggestion to look at things on the down tube got me thinking. Interface between the seat post clamp and frame is also a good shout, will make sure that's greased tonight.

When you stand up, your position is different so you're pulling in a different direction though.

Hope you find it, it can be flipping annoying. I got rid of my Giant because I couldn't cure a clicking noise.
