Hi, started to get a creaking noise from what I suspect to be the chain set/bottom bracket area, bike is a trek madone 2.1 and I only got it at the end of December, it's recently had its first free service and I mentioned it to them, upon collecting the bike they said the mechanic took it a test ride and didn't notice a noise. I wonder whether there is any point taking it back or should I attempt to cure this myself? It's really getting me down and spoiling my enjoyment of my cycling :-(

I was toying with going over to proper roadie pedals, but im not sure of the benefit.
(Apols to the OP for the hijack)

I had a creaking noise recently, changed every bearing, BB, chainrings, cassette and chain and still creaks were evident.
Simple fix in the end, the saddle rail.
Bike feels like new now though !!

Thought ill chuck in my creaking story, I had a creaking noise for a couple of rides and it was driving me bonkers. After lubing all the usual suspects, I was still hearing the dreaded creak. With a scared wallet I took it to my LBS fearing a bottom bracket at least, turns out after I had a nasty driver knock me clean off my bike a couple of weeks ago, the spokes took up a lot of tension. So basically, all it needed was a couple of squeezes to release the tension and hey presto !! Noise sorted. Myself and the young lad both took it for a wee spin and so far so good.

Just a wee update on my creaking noise, as suggested I had a good look at my shoes and pedals, removing the cleats and applying a little Teflon grease to the threads, plates etc and greasing the pedal spindles where they attach to the cranks. Result! Silent running has been resumed. Just wanted to say thanks all for the suggestions :-)

If the creak stops when you get out of the saddle, it's the seatpost. If it stops when you freewheel, it's the cleats. I can say this with ultimate certainty and it will never ever be anything aside from these two possibilities

One of my most frustrating creaks (impossible to track down) turned out to be the QR skewer. It only happened when standing and climbing. Changed the QR and it's gone away.
