Creaking - bottom bracket problem

So...long story short, my bike has a creak, it happens on every pedal stroke.

My pedals are new (done about 800miles), iv just replaced my chain, iv cleaned and refitted the bottom bracket, iv double checked for rubbing, iv upgraded my seatpost, iv greased my seatpost and seat rails.

Now the clicking only happens when I'm putting force on the pedels, when I'm coasting along its silent.

Anyway...my thinking is it could be the bottom bracket, it's a Shimano 105 BB, and if I didn't know better the creaking could be bearings that have worn down/out.

My question is do BB have bearings that could cause such a issue?

Sorry about the title...silly me hit post before I checked it

If a mod could change it to "Creaking - bottom bracket problem?" That would be handy ;)

A just in case procedure would be to take the pedals off, clean and grease the thread. What I once thought was a BB pron (;)) turned out to be simply that.

Had the same prob, drove me absolutely mental to the point i didn't want to ride it!
It took me almost three months to resolve the issue after checking every single thing that it could logically be.

I took the chain rings apart/de-greased them and put back together with small amount of fresh grease.

Bolts had alot of grit in them....
Problem gone.

I have some creaking Look Keo pedals, after replacing the BB and chainset, the exact same creak re-appeared within a day of fitting the new parts, cleaned and re-greased the Keo pedals, creaking went away temporarily, it looks like I need new pedals.

If it's a click I'd check that the BB cups are tight.

If it's a creak then that might be the axle turning within the bearings - ie the bearings are worn and need replacing.

I'd take the cranks off and turn the bearings by hand and see if they are running freely.

Possibly worn cleats. I know it may sound daft but that was strangely the cause of mine a while back and I went down the change/grease everything that moves route first as well.

I had a creak/clicking noise that only sounded under power. I changed the pedals and this sorted the problem. If you have spare pedals I 'd chek this before tackling the BB.

Try riding your bike in ordinary trainers to eliminate a shoe/pedal/cleat noise. I did just the same thing this morning with a 105 BB, rode it up and down the close waring trainers and it was still creaking, took it all out, greased any threads, now no creaking:thumbsup:

Cheers for the advice all.

I'm 99% sure it's not the pedals. I took the bike out today for a nice relaxing 70mile ride (legs hurt right now) and I removed my right leg from the pedal and peddled with my left leg, and then did the same with my other leg and I still have creaking/ticking so...by my logic that says its not the pedels if its still doing it when only peddling with one leg.

My bottom bracket has done about 3000 miles I think - its a Shimano 5700. I'm going to replace it and if its not the problema at the very least ill have a spare BB, and it will illimanate one possible avenue.

Btw...a friend of mine recommended that I buy a higher quality BB. Can anyone tell me if I was to buy a dura-ace (English thread) BB would it be compatible with my 105 groupset?

It would be compatible. In the 3000 miles has the BB been out? Take the crank out and use a finger t turn the bearings, if the feel "grindy" then they are probably shot, if not the cups may be a bit shitey around the threads like mine were after a few hundred. But then if you get 3000 miles out of a £15 component that's not too bad:thumbsup:
