Been commuting on a fixed since September. Nice cheap Bowery from Pearsons, but it's developed a big creak up frontframe/forks area over rough ground.

Thought I'd throw it open to suggestions before I took it apart or headed for the bike shop.

Any ideas?

I'd put my money on it being the forks. Same happened on my Bowery. They developed a creaking/cracking sound after a month or so and I've read at least one other post on LFGSS with the same problem. I replaced mine to be on the safe side.

It is the Headset By what you have said (if there is no cracks!) What I would of said is that there was not enough grease in there when it was but in. Or It has been washed out some how! What I would do is take the forks out and have a look at the bearings it would be the bottom ones that have gone. If it is that I would say by the sound of it it is time for a new headset you can try to take it back to the shop and tell then it is gust 6 months old and this should not of happened.

Like I say I'll bet it's the forks, and by strange coincidence yet another post has just been made this evening on LFGSS that would back that assumption up. See here. It's obviously a known problem and it seems some people have been given carbon ones as a replacement so it might be worth getting in touch with Giant if it turns out that's what the problem is.

I've had dealings with big manufacturers in the past and it normally takes ages to get warranty replacements so I didn't bother getting in touch with Giant (I got mine cheap from Pearsons too) instead thinking it would be easier and quicker to just replace them with a carbon fork myself. If I knew it was a common problem I'd have given them a call instead of replacing them myself. I might still give them a ring and see what they can do.

Calm down, there's no need to get arsey. How do you know the statement about the headset you made is right? The fact is you don't know either.

I didn't just take a wild guess. I read the original post, then offered my opinion based on recent personal experience of the exact same problem with the exact same model of bike, and backed up that opinion with tales and links to the experiences of others who have also had the same issue with what is obviously quite a common problem and known to Giant.

I'm not suggesting he goes replacing his forks without checking that's where the problem lies, but where's the harm in ruling that out? I'd rather mention it and have him check (even though it seems to have offended you somehow) than say nothing and have him run the risk of the forks failing on him while he goes around greasing stuff and tightening bolts trying to get rid of the creaking.

Up the creak

Hey fellas calm down.

I'm taking the bike into the shop today to see what the experts say.

Creak saga

The bike shop stripped it and greased it back up and checked the forks. They say there's nothing wrong but it still creaks like a bad 'un, completely ruins the ride and is so loud it's embarrassing.

Looks like I'll have to make a fuss or shell out for some new forks.

I'd start by getting them to replace the headset. If it still creaks after that then it looks like it's the forks. Creaking forks is certainly unusual but going by what kyuss says, it sounds plausible.

I assume (looking at the spec of the Bowery) its a carbon fork / alloy steerer.
Possibly not relevent, but I had a full carbon fork that developed an alarming creak / cracking sound. The top cap (scuse the non tech description) just needed tightening. It seemed tight to me...but LBS gave it a bit more and the creak stopped.

The Bowery has a steel fork. Tightening the top cap made a difference for a while on mine but it did get to the stage that I couldn't tighten it anymore without the headset binding.

The way I checked once I'd ruled out the headset, bars, stem and wheel, was to take the fork out the frame and remove the brake caliper. I then put the fork face down on the floor and leant on it slightly at the point the brake attaches, then turned it round the other way and applied a bit pressure to the steerer and fork legs and it creaked. I turned it round again and applied some pressure at the brake mount again and it creaked. It seemed to creak in the fore/aft direction. There were no visible cracks or anything on the fork itself, and I even removed the crown race to rule that out of the equation, but once it was out of the frame and flexed a bit it was clear the fork itself was the problem.

I'm not saying that's what's wrong with yours but it's worth giving it a proper check. You can't always trust your LBS.

It looks like Kyuss knows what he's talking about. Sounds like a design fault with this fork that hopefully the manufacturer will, at some point, own up to. Don't hold your breath though. Reckon you should demand a fork upgrade asap.
