You need to replace the bit that joins the cranks. It is called a bottom bracket. Shouldn't be more than £20-£30....

In fact the new BB or BB cartridge plus the tool to fit it, is probably worth more than the bike......

At the very least you will need a crank puller (the cranks won't necessarily come off without it) and a Bottom Bracket tool. Worth researching this before you buy the Bottom Bracket, otherwise you could end up spending more than a bike shop would charge to repair it.

You need specific tools to fit a bottom bracket properly, so you might want to consider getting it from a shop that will fit it. DOn't go somewhere where they make you leave your bike with them, go somewhere where they will do it on the spot, it's not a big job....

if the BB is not a sealed jobby, like in the old days, both cups were separsate frm the BB so maybe they have become undone? difficicult to say without knowing the full story.

we bought the bike second hand
it was not loose when he got it
i havnt got the specialist equipment to get into it and have a look
the most i can do without doing any damage is getting the cranks off
the spindle is loose so it can move up and down
but there is no give left to right if u c what i mean
i know someone who can lend me the proper tools
shoul;d i get in there and have a look?
cuz if its completly bust i may as well see what i can do
my father does alot with motorbikes/cars etc so hess experienced in this sort of thing jus not with pushbikes
i could ask him to give me a hand
