Hello, I could use some help with removing my crankset, a suntour cr 210 (well that is that the label says). I brought an extractor, an icetoolz cotterless crank extractor which looks like this; http://www.icetoolz.com/icetoolz/index_pro3.php?parent=3&id=12. However I can't get the extractor to fit. The outer part fits fine but the inner rod is too big to fit in the hole.

Does anyone know of a crank extractor that would fit, or if I could be doing something wrong? I read somewhere that square tapered splines have two standards, ISO and Shimano and that ISO has a smaller taper end so I wonder if that is the reason why the extractor doesn't fit

If the central bolt doesn't fit inside the square hole you could get a nut or something that does and use that as a bridge to the central bolt.

I have a similar one and I had the same problem but by just pulling that shiny round silver bit on the end off it fits perfect.

If you've never used one of these before, ensure that the extractor part is screwed out before you screw the main body part into the crank and ensure it is screwed in all the way and tight into the crank, if not, when you start tightening the extractor part up it can force the complete removal tool out of the crank and rip the threads out of the crank with it, I know from experience when I was rushing one day

I did exactly the same thing myself!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried it without the metal bit on and it still doesn't fit. The rod seems just slightly too large. I've included an image of the hole which may be useful, ( I hope)

Really? I am amazed - what is the diameter of the "rod" (the part that usually sits inside the magnetic/sprung "cap" or "metal bit")?

In case there is any misunderstanding it is not supposed to go inside the 8mm hole for the M8 crank bolt. It is designed to push against the end flat of the square taper, which is roughly 13mm x 13mm (whether ISO or JIS). As others have said it is critically important that you understand how this tool works and how to use it correctly.

I think RecordAce has sussed it. The OP seems to think the extractor is supposed to fit inside the crank bolt hole. Read the link provided by RecordAce, and you should be ok.

Just using this sort of tool just now, i had to ask at the cycle shop how to use it.

At first i thought, yes the tool splits into two sections, but none of the parts are square like the picture, the guy then said fit the tool in and it winds in a clockwise direction and the crank arm will come off, and it did.
It's fairly easy once you get the hang of how this tool works.I am doing 2 cranks rather than just one.
This video any use to you?, it shows removal of the crank.
