Hi all, newbie to road bikes and self maintenance. So hope someone on here could help. I've searched the wonderful world of goggle etc but cannot find any videos etc that show crank arms like the ones I have, on an old BSA bike, that I'm trying to restore as a trainer bike.

Want to get all the moving parts off and cleaned up. Below is a picture of the offending item.

Thanks

That's a cottered crank. you need to remove the cotter pins, preferably with a mallet. The pin holds the crank arm on the crank (there's a notch in the crank. If you search cottered cranks you should find something. Careful with the pins (multiple taps may damage the thread where the nut you have presumably removed? has gone on) as they are relatively soft. You may be best getting some spare pins in before hand! I got some cheap on ebay

Diggs many thanks for this I did assume this was what I needed to do,didnt know they were called cottered though. I will need some new pins as the current ones are not going to come out without some forceful help.

Thanks again

Ps I didn't remove the nuts, they weren't on there to start with.

Think which ever way I do it will need new parts by the time I'm done

Lol luckily got this one for free and only going to be used on my trainer, so a good place to start learning about this sort of thing. If anything goes south, just throw it away and find another

I did try doing the google search first but couldn't find any crank arm removals that looked anything like this one. My feelings were the pin had to come out, but a few taps with the hammer and neither were budging so thought there must be something else I was missing.
Trying to do it myself is all new to me, usually just pay someone to do something I'm not sure about. But really starting to get into my cycling and want to learn how to do bits and bobs myself. Waiting to embark on some bike maintenance courses
