Countries you have visited and will never go back.

The three things you would never do again thread got me thinking about Morocco and why I’d never go back.

It’s a country I visited three times and enjoyed each occasion, especially the food, but two terrorist incidents put me off ever going back. The first incident was a cafe bombing in Marrakesh which occurred about two months after we’d visited the city. These things can happen all over the world and I put it to the back of my mind.

A couple of years later we went back. On April 28th 2011, just before noon, a bomb went off in the Argana Cafe in Jemaa el-Fnaa Square killing 17 and injuring another 25, four seriously.

We were flying home later that day and had been in the cafe, for a tea and light snack, before checking out of the hotel and heading to the airport. We left the cafe only about 30 minutes before the bomb went off!

It was way to close for comfort and we haven’t been back since.

Are there any countries on your list that you have visited and will not go back?

Ex merchant navy, a long time ago! But visited numerous countries that I have no desire to set foot in again. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, India, and Pakistan all spring to mind. Dubai I would avoid too, but for different reasons, it's way over developed now and very false.

Glad to say I went to a lot of places I would love to return to, but unlikely I will. Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, New Zealand.....

One country that is an oddity in my mind is Iran, where I joined my first ship back in 1978 (Khorromshahr on the river bordering Iraq). Part of me wants to go a cycling tour there!

Tunisia. Permanently hassled in shops & souks to the point of never buying anything even though I actually wanted to!
The terrorist attack on Sousse Beach, where more than 30 tourists were killed, was the one for the hotel we were staying at and was not long after we had left.

if paying for myself, I wouldn’t go back to China, Japan or Brazil, all visited for work in 2012.
Places I’ve holidayed, wouldn’t go back to Myanmar of Guatemala, seen what I’d like to see (I guess if I won a holiday to either, maybe)

The USA, specifically New York, its an amazing place, but not for me, I've been once and never want to return.

Like Pete I found the locals in both Tunisia (and Egypt) rather unpleasant and had never had hassle like it anywhere else. Wouldn’t go back to either

Another reason for Egypt was the heavily armed escort (there was a number of large calibre automatic weapons and armoured vehicles in the mix) we got for the trip from Aswan to Abu Simbel. It was a real eye opener and a very unnerving experience.

I believe the escort system has been stopped since.
