could valve nuts be the cause?

Now i know some people dont use them,but could they be the cause of todays minor problem.
I was topping up the tyres and could here a hissing from the tyre,turns out it was where the valve stem joins the tube.
Fitted spare tube.Then was on my way again.Spare tube had a shorter stem will this be stronger?
Also could the knurled nut have caused the valve to tube joint to fail?

Leave them off. Some makes are more prone to valve stem/tube joint failure.

Michelin have smooth stems on their tubes - you don't need the nut. Just adds an extra stress !

I use them for holding the valve in position while I fit the pump as it stops the valve retreating into the tyre when I'm pushing the pump head on.

Less bothered about whether or not they are on after that.

I like them on while fitting a tyre, before inflating it. Seems to hold the whole lot in place.

Slacken them off - to just below the top of the valve - before inflating. So effectively off.

Can't understand why they're there. Car tyres don't have them, and as fossyant's post #2, not all bike tubes even have the threads.

car wheels have shraeder type valves that fit into the rim and are held in place. the nut on presta valves is there to help fill the inner tube as when fitting a pump to the valve, it tends to be pushed away into the rim.

I leave the nut on and never had any problem that can be attributed to the nut.

My main complaint is that I can't get 'em off easily at the roadside. Worse since tyres improved so the tubes are in longer between punctures. (3 years now for one of mine).

I've always use them so far so good

must admit latest batch i bought are threadless by michelin so wont be using them on these

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
After having similar problems with Continental tubes, I now use Michelin, so the question doesn't arise. Much easier to remove the pump chuck too. Think the twisting and pulling to get the pump off a threaded valve probably causes the problem. Schrader valves don't have nuts either, do they?

I killed a tube or two by doing the valve too tight then when it was fully pumped up it tore the valve off. I still leave them on, but I only put them on afterwards and only until they just touch the rim, so probably quite pointless. :smile:

If I had tubes with them, I'd leave them on. However, I currently have about 8 or 9 spare Vitoria tubes without them.
