Could I butcher this in some way?

Hi all,

I'd love to fit a gorgeous porteur rack to my '59/60 Triumph but the gorgeous chrome and wooden things are so expensive! I love being a bit crafty so I'm determined to get this look much cheaper. I read about someone who got a standard front rack and used that along with a chopped up shopping basket and came up with something pretty cool looking, and I thought why not try!

In my hunt for a cheap front rack to use as a base I came across this - http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q..._suspension_fork_mount___26_or_29inch___black There isn't a non suspension version available, especially not at that price. Do you think I could play with this and make it fit in some way? I apologise if this is a really stupid question, those on my other thread will know this is my first adult bicycle and you have to talk slow to me with advice :-) I'm very crafty (as in I like craft, not that I'm devious!) but never been very 'grrr' hands-on before now, and haven't owned a bike since I was a little kid, so everything I do on this bike is new to me.

My husband is a lot more practical so if chopping metal, etc is involved it can be done :-)

I didn't mean the pun in the title, ie. a butcher's rack, but its just dawned on me!

Ah, after more hunting I've found this picture
$%28KGrHqFHJFIFEeUhTE,qBRJ5l8ilng~~60_35.JPG

That's what I'm looking at isn't it?
So does that mean it'll actually work fine. It might just not look as nice/appropriate on my girly?

Or not? Now I'm looking at Audrey (the bike) again. My front brake bolt is lower than the top of the tyre so that won't work.

I think I'll apologise for this conversation with myself, go back to the drawing board, or give up and just get on with making sure whatever rack I get for the back is twice as pretty

You could probably make it fit, although having short stays on the rack means it might get in the way of the brake. You may just have to try it and see or you could (maybe:smile:) get your husband to custom build a rack for you.

Having spent more time trawling google I think I'm going to step away from the porteur idea. I'm looking at at least £100 for a nice one and it seems there are some pretty cool baskets for a bit less. I'm not going to be carrying huge weights. Mostly shopping and picnics :-) I'm not a wicker basket girl, which is what I think put me off, but it seems I can combine what I like about the porteur with a basket and come out with something much more practical (quick release, no extra legs, etc)

There were other cheaper options, but not in the UK! And I'm always pained to pay more on shipping than the item cost

Still hunting...
