Cotic Road Rat newbie question

So, my employer is opening the cycle to work scheme next week and after a week or so of scouring the net etc, I've decided that I'll most likely be placing an order for a Cotic Road rat.

Unfortunately, I'm a little confused about the set up, so I apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge.

Essentially I'd like to end up with a set up with disc brakes and an 8 speed hub. I was thinking of ordering the complete, long-framed flatbar bike with the Magura Julie (front and rear) disc brakes, but was wondering if this would present problems when I (get a professional to) install the hub at a later date.

From what I can gather, I don't think this would be a problem (but how the hell would I know?

Thanks in Advance!

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Changing the rear hub can work out seriously expensive.

The road rat ships as a single speed and and (in this case) disc brakes, but i'd like to add 8 speed hub at a later date.

I was wondering if it was a mistake to order the bike with disc brakes (an extra £100) from Cotic, when I will be adding an 8 speed hub at a later date? i.e. will the hub fit with the disc brakes that will already be in place on the back wheel?

Also, if you could give me a rough idea on just how I can expect to pay to have the hub installed (Alfine? Nexis?). I'd be very greatful indeed.

As far as i'm aware the nexus wont take disc brakes but the Alfine will.

Assuming the 135mm spaced Alfine hub will fit (It should but I wouldn't like to say for certain).

I expect you'd need the hub and fittings. say £200. A new rim + spoke £40, To get this built, £20.

The disc rotor transfered across, chainline corrected, new chain, shifters fitted, say £50.

Easily the best part of £300 if not more.

I expect there are slightly cheaper ways of doing this; but it's always going to work out expensive.

ouch....a bit more than I bargained for. I've just emailed Cotic, and will post any interesting findings here...

Looks like i might be back to choosing a new bike AGAIN.

Thanks for your help Redbike.

I've got an alfine on my MTB. it would be easyish to do.
but you could always buy it new with an alfine fitted from the off

18bikes have one pictured on their website, so you could buy it like that new!!

If you were going to go the upgrade route, i Don't think it would cost £300. It cost me a lot less than that.

heya, checkling out mentions of our site, stumbled across this. Simply put, yep, we can sort a Roadrat, with Alfine. Either- complete custom build, or using the standard Cotic bike (although this way you do end up with a spare wheel) That said- the complete bike is such a bargain (especially through cyclescheme) that it still works out good. That help?

Cheers,
Si
