Hi
having a small issue with gears. Gear cable was loose and after pulling cable taut and tightening up, it now appears i have another problem. When i pedal backwards my chain is juddery and not smooth. I think it needs a quick like it need tuning or something Anyone know how much it costs to have gears tuned/set up or can help with this problem? I have a Caad 8 (105) and its new so nothing worn or needing lubricating.

any help is appreciated. I live near Hull so any advice where to take it where its not going to be super pricey, im grateful for.

cheers

If the bike is new and you purchased it locally, you should be entitled to a free checkup a few weeks after buying, precisely because cables stretch and the shop will sort it out FOC as part of that free checkup. That's very standard practice.

It probably needs nothing but the barrel adjuster on the rear mech winding half a turn in or out, as you have already taken up the slack and then found the rear mech to be out of adjustment it probably needs a quarter turn or so to the right. Then try it again, if it's still skipping it needs another quarter turn.

Despite decades of cycling and being able to do maintenance tasks on bikes since i was 12 (some jobs grown men wouldnt undertake),,,some things fill you with trepidation. Derailleur adjustment was mine. i didn't learn until maybe 4 years ago (i'm 54), funnily enough with the video Ianrauk has shown.
Start right at the beginning, disconnect your cable at the RD and follow the instructs...i found myself trying to shortcut some of the sequence (leaving my cable connected), but it works against you. Disconnect and follow the video. It is surprisingly simple once youve done it a couple times...just make sure the cable is routed absolutely correctly (look very carefully at the cable at the clamp, i once slightly mis routed it at that point and couldnt figure out why it wouldnt work right.
Dont touch the end stops (the two screws on the RD). If theyve not been touched there's no reason they should need adjusting. Doing so will deepen your problems.

It really is quite straightforward...honest
