With a Bafang mid drive they're speed sensing not torque. This means power is still applied even when almost freewheeling. Just the situation when for example approaching a junction. Without brake cut-offs, the motor would want to keep speed for several seconds, possibly causing a safety issue if you weren't paying full attention.
With Torque sensing motors, when you ease off power the motor also backs off power almost instantly. So you don't need to have brake cut-offs. Some folk still want them, but my wife's bike works so well there is no need. She has a TSDZ2 motor with open software. The developer has done a fantastic job of refining the motor's controller, allowing class leading pedal/motor smoothness, along with added features.
