Conti Ultra Gator Duraskin v ???

Having spent a half hour trawl in this forum, these tyres seem to be popular with CC'ers. Having had a frustrating weekend with punctures, I am looking at alternatives to current rubber for my short commute/leisure/fitness trek on 700 x 25.

Any comments on Spesh Roubaix Pro2, Schwalbe Durano Performance or Vittoria Rubino Pro? (latter @ £17.50 with wiggle seems to be good price!)

And being a cheapskate, don't want to go over arbitrary max of £30!

I've had Rubino Pros on my road bike for a couple of years. They have remained entire. Grip well in the dry, but I don't use my road bike in the wet.

I was going with the Conti's but was won round at the last minute with some Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. Can't comment on them as they are yet to arrive though!

I've got these on both my bikes, fitted them January, and they are good, I've just had my first puncture with them yesterday.

Had my 1st flat with the Durano+ on Saturday after over 1200 miles.Did the 115 miles no problem then woke up Sunday and noticed the rear was flat, must have happened late on and resulted in a slow puncture.
Found 2 pieces of glass embedded so got them out and hopefully they'll be good for a while now.

I hated Gatorskins when I tried them (25c, wire on).

Roll really nicely at the recommended pressure, but skiddy in the wet, and to this day, the only tyre I've managed to wheelspin.

Recently I have just switched to Bontrager "All Weather" hardcase tyre as they was recommended to me by my LBS and I have been impressed with them, just replaced my rear tyre at just under 3000miles and not one puncture, and the front is still in good condition and once again no punctures, plus the price is right, and found them good in the wet too, today's ride was in fact an ultimate test with the torrential rain and not one dodgy moment. In fact I cannot remember the las time I have had to replace a tyre through being worn out, usually they start to come apart or get badly cut up.

In the past I have used various tyres and found the Bontrager almost as good as Marathon Plus which are far tougher and harder wearing, but the Bontrager have the slight advantage to me as they are easier to fit and the thought of struggling with fitting Marathons if they ever did puncture in bad conditions, miles from home does not appeal to me, plus they do not make 23mm Marathon Plus

I have a feeling though they do not make a 25mm, as I was looking at just the normal "All weather" online But I have looked around online and they do a 25mm

Thanks one and all, interesting.

GA: lucky you, not riding the road bike in the wet. what do you ride?
Cheule: who/what won you round?
BenM: Bonty makes a lot of sense in one respect as they are default make for trek, so they should 'ride' well.
daveR, potsy & mrP: all very positive, thanks; tempting!
John M: have heard that, have now been swayed to something else

Be carefull with these tyre's, I have not used the "Hardcase" version of this tyre, but they are no different, apart for the puncture protection, to the plain "Race lite version, they are very poor in the wet. Last year I crashed at 19mph on a bend at the bottom of a hill that I normally take at no less than 29mph in the wet, even going downhill on the straight before the bend, I was sliding so I had to slow down for the bend and knew I would not make it. I knew the tyre's were not up to it though that day, as I had never had them out in the wet before and they what was fitted on my new road bike which I only had for a week, when my back wheel was spinning through lack of grip as I climbed a 16% hill prior to crashing.

If you do a search on line, you will find reviews on how poor they are in the wet, other than that they do get good recommendations regarding the puncture protection.

Its probably why they brought out the "all weather" version of the tyre as I use
