Does it say anything in the date/time settings preference pane? Perhaps your NTP server is flaky.

If you're running Windows, try double clicking on the time in your taskbar and in the 'Date and time properties' window that opens, click the 'Internet time' tab, then put a tick in the 'Automatically synchronise with an internet time server' box and click on 'Update now'. This might correct it.

I know in a desk top this can happen when the small battery dies inside and is easily remedied by changing said battery. I don't know if laptops have one.

They certainly do. It would have to be a very old laptop for this to apply though... and taking a laptop apart to get at the mainboard is somewhat more involve than opening the case on a desktop machine!

I had this happen to an old base unit after about 4 years which refused to boot and gave a 'three beeps' warning while trying. Changed the button battery on the motherboard and it was (still is) happy again.
