I have bought a cheap computer from amazon and was just reading through instructions to attach it . Instruction says to place sensor 'maximum 80-95 cm from computer' Herby hangs the problem. from where the computer is to almost the bottom of my forks is 60cm! is the instruction a misprint? if I put it on my bike and the distance is only 50cm is this going to matter?

You're taking the rip right ?
Instructions say no more than 85-95 and you're worried it's too close ?
That value is the maximum range for the sensor and takes no consideration that 3 foot distance would mean
you had the sensor mounted on the rear forks on a long frame
The important distance will be that between the sensor and magnet on the spokes.

Well, on a recumbent there is often a problem with the computer being too far from the sensor on the front wheel. If you want the computer on the handlebars (assuming OSS) it can be quite a bit more than 90cm to the front wheel - not to mention that the computer isn't in the expected position (i.e. more or less vertically above the sensor) which is usually important for wireless models.

No,you'll be Ok fitting it on a standard upright bike,if you get problems make sure the magnet and sensor are quite close when they meet 5-10mm usually.
You're now obligated to beat your last time every time you go out now though
