Competition riding on public highways

I am pretty confident that most members of the cycling community would be absolutely against motor vehicles engaging in competitive on road driving/riding.

How do we therefore justify competition cycling on public roads?

I dunno. Maybe because cyclists and bikes don't kill people were as car drivers and cars do.

I bet if you changed the word "cyclist" to "driver" in your google search, you would get a lot more results.

Time trialing or racing?

I bet if you changed the word "cyclist" to "driver" in your google search, you would get a lot more results.

No doubt, what differance does that make.

In recent weeks there have been two cyclists at least who have been ksi'd whilst taking part in competition riding. One as I recall lost control going down Porlock Hill and ended up under a car and then there was the the Irish girl in Cambridge.

I can't help wondering if these accidents were caused by the riders being involved in competitions?

As far as I know, time trialing is just getting to somewhere as quickly as you can, most drivers seem to apply that same logic to each car journey they make (although they do have speed limits)

Yep. You are correct she was on a training ride.

The reason for the disparity is that both used to be allowed but it was abused by some motorists (and still is in things like the Gumball and Modball Rallies) so motor sport competitions on public roads were banned. But that may be about to be reversed.

And most of them are killed by drivers not paying attention. It wouldn't except in rare cases, make any difference whether they were time trialling or out for a ride.
