Hi, I've been running the old Tiagra 9-speed set up for a while and I'm looking for some new shifters - I've recently upgraded the rear mech to 105 which works okay but now I'd like to upgrade the shifetrs as well - I'm thinking if I replace the current Tiagra 9-speed with 105 10 speed and change to a 10 speed chain and cassette everything should still work okay or am I missing something - I only ever use the outer chainring on my ride to work so the front mech is almost redundant and see no point it changing it.

I upgraded to 105 on my bike and the last thing I added was the shifters.
The 8 speed shifters worked ok, but i wasn't getting the smallest and biggest cogs on the cassette due to the 8sp indexing on the levers.
Since I've put the 105 shifters all is good. Unlike you though I did change the front mech to 105. Just so it was all the same. The only thing I haven't changed as yet is the crankset, but the 105 works ok with the existing crankset.
I will buy a new 105 crankset because I want a little bit lower gearing, but not in a great rush. When funds allow.

105 is great kit but the new external bearing crankset is pig ugly its probably very aero but that inch wide outer ring just looks wrong, maybe that's just on the 52. I only fitted it cos I got a deal on the whole groupset and intend swapping it for another when I get the time and can be bothered.

I upgraded my Bob Jackson from 9 speed Ultegra to 10 speed (the old shifters going on the commuter whose 9 speed DA shifters suffered following a fall) - all worked fine........
