Hi all, while cleaning my MTB earlier I realised the front derailleur cable was starting to fray. I released the cable and proceeded to remove and replace it. The gear shifter however, seemed determined to make a seemingly simple process very complicated. I could not open it to replace the cable so I tried to dismantle the shifter which resulted in the screws, springs and other small parts going AWOL in my garage . The shifter is attached to the brake lever and I now need to replace the unit. It's a Shimano 3 speed ST-EF41-L. Could I replace it with a different 3 speed shifter as I don't fancy trying to change the cable on this type again?

You might find another make will do but here’s a video of How to replace the cable the Shimano EF51 which should be similar to your one:

Unfortunately the EF51 is a different build to the EF41. There are a couple of YouTube tutorials on how to dismantle the EF41, but rebuilding it is a different matter altogether! It's basically non serviceable and it would probably be easier and less stressful to buy a new shifter. Thanks Cycleops.

Yes. Needs to be an MTB shifter - most will be for triples.
Yes, I've ordered the EF51. Here is the dismantled old shifter. Where does one start?
