Compatibility of Chainset

biggs682 has kindly offered me this chainset for my Dawes, (price to be negotiated;))

But, neither of us know if it is compatible.

It will fit in that it's a square taper, but will the fact it's 10 speed work with my Shimano 7 speed cassette and my 7/8 speed KMC chain?

Cheers.

It is Chorus? Campag is ISO not JIC so you will have to take that into account for BB compatibility consideration.

If you question about compatibility is only with respect to the spacing between rings then you have nothing to worry about.

What record ace says.

You need a ISO square taper BB. Japan Industry Standard is what most manufacturers used though, eg Shimano and the rest.

No big issue, it will work but you need an new BB.

Cheers fossy, that's a bummer as I've just put a new Shimano one in :cursing:

Recordace knows his stuff on campag. I had once thought square taper was standard, but it is indeed different, and it was recordace that pointed out the difference.

TBH most folk that bought Shimano bought their BBs and the same with Campag. Just like the Hollowtech V ultra torque

Cheers RAFN, so will it not fit to Shimano UN BB?

It depends on what you mean by fit. If you meant whether the chainset will go on your BB then yes it will, but it will be further out by around 4.5mm than if the BB had an ISO taper. But that does not really say anything about compatibility in terms of achieving whatever chainline or clash free clearance because: a) chance is an existing JIS BB will likely not have the same spindle length as what the Chorus is designed for (e.g. to deliver a 45mm chainline), and b) I have no idea what BB you have and what chainline you are shooting for.

In the absence of a BIG box of different BBs available for trial and error, one will always have to perform an informed calculation when mixing and matching BB and chainset that were never designed to go together. If not, then as Dirty Harry famously said: "You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" ^_^

Ah you are kind but alas that is untrue. I know a mere fraction of what @accountantpete of this parish knows re campag...

You are both great Campag knowledge bases.

I know my Shimano from 1990. When I was a lad, I was going to order a Colnago but because Shimano had its new Dura Ace that kicked ass, I went to a local bike builder who built my bike with the same tubes, but knew why I wouldn't mix Italian frames with Japanese components. I ended up with an Italian tubed, British built, Shimano equipped bike.
