Just for fun then....

1980s 531 Raleigh frame has just gone for powder coating...most of the rest is binned (metaphorically). The old Suntour mechs, cranks, centrepull brakes etc just a bit too old....
Ive been buying bits everywhere, ebay, carboot etc....so how much does it cost

Raleigh Clubman (carboot) £25

Bits salvaged include...and theres not much
New IG51 chain
Stem
Seatpost (grudgingly)

Bits brought so far..
Powder coat FOC hopefully...contacts are useful
Near new Tiagra crankset (ebay) £32 Includes BB
Near new Sora rear mech (ebay) £9
New Sora front mech (ebay) £6
New Foskar saddle £10
Near new Sora shifters (carboot) £1.....yes..£1 The bargain of a lifetime
New Tiagra wheelset (Fatbirds) £58
Near new 8 speed cassette (ebay)£6

Bits still needed...
All brake, gear cables and sleeves
Band on cable/shifter stop
Handlebars
Mudguards
Handlebar tape....and some 531 transfers hopefully

So, ive spent £147 so far ..potentially £200 if i'd had to pay for the powdercoat...maybe another £30 or £40 for the bits yet to get...

Bl00dy ell....£250 for a rebuild
On the plus side most of it will be like new
And of course....enormous satisfaction (hopefully)

Whats your story ??? Horrors, headaches or happiness

I know....whats surprised me is how its all totted up, even getting the bargains .
Spose i could have cut corners...but it wouldnt be the same then.

Never mind, having a project has its own value ;)

Ok, so the final(ish) costs
Frame and forks £25
Shotblasting £10
Powdercoating FOC
Near new Tiagra crankset (ebay) £32 Includes BB
Near new Sora rear mech (ebay) £9
New Sora front mech (ebay) £6
New Foskar saddle £10
Near new Sora shifters (carboot) £1.....yes..£1 The bargain of a lifetime
New Tiagra wheelset (Fatbirds) £58
Near new 8 speed cassette (ebay)£6
Cables etc (LBS etc) £10 ish
Bartape etc (LBS) £15
Brake calipers (ebay) £15
Tyres / tubes (new spares from my Bianchi) FOC
Pedals (carboot sale) £1
Transfers etc (ebay) £7
1 inch x 1.1/8 quill (LBS) £7
Handlebars/stem (carboot sale) £1

£213...add a few quid i may have missed somewhere.....

£220 say...spent over 6 months.
A good deal of entertainment, searching ebay, sorting things etc.
A good deal of time spent assembling etc, solving the little problems.
A good deal of pride in the finished thing.

£220 quid...yes, there are a couple of things i'm not entirely happy with, but its been great fun and very educating..

But beware...if you brought all the bits in the traditional way..ie there were no internet, donor parts, and carboot sales.....forget it. Its just not practical or affordable.
