Commuting Lube and Chain Cleaner

Hi All,

Now I'm on the new chariot I want to care for it a little better than cleaning the old one's chain with soapy water and spraying WD40 on it (sorry lol!)

So.....

I'm after a 'wet' lube, and a cleaner. Don't want to break the bank as I'm not on a £2k carbon but like I say looking to improve my current 'method'

Cheers!^_^

Any particular reason why wet lube?

Personally I would use dry lube.

I tried wet lube for a while last winter. Whilst arguably it needs lubricating at less regular intervals, the wet lube ends up in a guey mess. I would imagine I spent more time cleaning the chain when using wet lube than using dry lube and cleaning more often.

If you really want wet lube then you can have the remainder of my bottle for a couple of quid.

Dry lube wise. I have some White Lightning Epic Ride and Muc off PTFE chain lube. Bth are fine, although the muc off is a spray so can be a little messy. I understand they the Finish Line dry lube is very good and I have some on order.

Literally fishing for ideas here:thumbsup: Like I say my old method was rather too barbaric I think for the new bike so I want to do things properly without spending a fortune in time/money. If a wet lube is more messy than its benefits, I'm more than happy to change my expectations.

Cycling wise I spend propably 50/50 road/off road, but the off road is not exactly swamps (Sundays ride was 90% dry, with 2 sections a mile or so long of quite muddy track)

I'll get a couple of these ordered, and see how they compare against each other. Thanks for the tips:thumbsup:

I use Shimano PTFE Dry Lube on both my bikes - far less messy than the wet lube I was using and seems to do the job! I found any dust/grit/sand etc ended up sticking to the chain with the wet stuff.

Last winter I found that Muc Off Dry lube lasted less than two shortage outings on average (atleast 3 applications in a working week or the links showed rust), due to the snow and salt.
Wet Lube all the way for the commuter and Mickle method, far less work...

1 in favour for wet lube it seems, I should have added a vote lol

Which Wet Lube would you recommend then please?

Also whats the Mickle method, its not one of these ones where I'm soaking the chain, and sticking it in a oven etc etc lol

I'm another fan of the wet lube I'm afraid, Finish Line small bottle usually lasts me a seasons riding. I found the dry lube rather tedious to apply and agree with 2Loose that it requires re-applying often (these other guys might do small commutes). I wipe off the surface oil/grit after each ride and only wash/relube the chain when it fails a post ride inspection.

I checked my chain last night and after about 2.5k miles the 0.75 wear indicator is still nowhere near to being fully engaged, which is testament to the Mickle method with an occassional deeper clean.
