Commuting in Switzerland

I mentioned in another thread that people in Switzerland seemed to arrive at work on/in/wearing a number of different methods of transport that appeared strange to the UK way of thinking; long boards, in-line skates, scooters, etc.

Last week I was in Le Chaux-de-Fonds all week - one of the guys at the company I was visiting commuted the 13km to work each day (and home obviously) by unicycle.

There is something about the UK that I can't quite put my finger on.

There seems to be an inbuilt thing in the British psyche that stops us (them) being open to alternative lifestyles. I have always adopted a more European (open) attitude to new experience that has been met with almost constant derision and ridicule from friends/work colleagues. Anything I have done/tried that is a little 'different' is laughed at - but going to the pub, playing pool/darts/football is seen as 'normal' by them. Likewise driving to work in a 'nice' car is something to be proud of, yet cycling to work/on holiday is something that (and I quote) 'a farking yoghurt knitting wierdo' does.....
