A colleague of mine at work is looking for a hybrid for a 6 mile each way commute to work on mostly rural roads. He will definitley add a rack and probably mudguards. Can anybody please suggest a new bike that would meet his needs. He is aware that this (£200) is the bottom of the price range for a 'decentish' hybrid but he would like something that would last more than a couple of years

I do recall reading on this forum that Dawes do a decent hybrid range that start at £200. Anyboby know what this might have been.

Also do Decathlon or Halfords do a decent hybrid for approx £200

Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated

I'm picking up a second hand Specialized Globe Sport tomorrow. Got it from ebay, I'll let you know how it is. I decided to go second hand in an attempt at getting more for my money. Spent £180, now the rest of my budget can go towards accessories and upkeep.

Thanks for the comments. He's unlikely to buy off ebay as he's already bought a bike off ebay and found out later it was too big. He's therefore looking to up his budget and get a new, if he can afford to

Ridgeback, Dawes, Trek and Giant all make good hybrids. At that kind of price, though, you need your LBS to stand by the bike if it goes wrong. I'd go to any local bike shops, see which one strikes you as the best, and take their advice. Make sure you get a free service with it.
