My daughter, moderately sporty but not yet into road bikes, is looking to buy a flat bar commuter for regular journeys home to workplace. Limited hill work in W London so a 3/7 speed hub gear would suffice. A belt driven model would be ideal. Budget arouond £500, second hand not excluded. Any thoughts?

I read the title and thought that sounds like a fair swop! You Sir are very mis-leading

Trek do a nice lightish Soho Delux model with a belt drive and an 8 speed hub gear - nice it is as well. New, I think they are around £850; s/h I have seen year old models sell for around £400-500. The earlier models had weak hub brakes, so watch out for how old it the bikes is. They also do a cheaper single speed belt-drive, which may be worth a look.
