Apparently I am an inspiration to some of my colleagues and one of them now wants to get back to cycling. He has a Peugeot Premiere 15 speed which has sat in his garage for ... well, years; he wants to know if it is worth putting back on the road.
For me I'd have great fun upgrading it appropriately but I'm not sure if I should advise him to buy a hybrid?
Most of all it needs a bl@@dy good cleanup. Absolute essentials to get it on the road are:
Pair 700c alloy wheels (circa £60 ?)
Piair of tyres for the above (circa £40 ?)
Ditto inner tubes (circa £10 ?)
Brake pads for alloy wheels (side-pulls) (circa £15 ?)
Brake and gear cables (probably) (circa £15 ?)
Essentials total £140
C-spannered bottom bracket seems OK, I could clean, grease and put that back for him; headset bearings feel OK. Cranks, chainset have surface rust but will clean up and are reusable; chain might even clean up! Cassette doesn't look worn (doubt it was much used TBH). Saddle is tatty but usable, bars probably need new tape and brake levers include suicide bars. A full rebuild would definitely take this into new bike territory.
Thoughts? Worth doing the basics on and he can decide later whether to buy new or rebuild?
