I wear an very thin Altura windproof skull cap under my helmet and if it is really cold a full face balaclava. I should say my helmet is a one size fits all and can be easily adjusted to accommodate a skull cap.

I have an Aldi cap (the one paired with overshoes).  One of the best things I have bought there.   Shame the same couldn't be said about the overshoes

Wear a hat, skullcap, a buff or a headband with ear flaps. Or pull my hood up then put my helmet on top of it. You may need to adjust the helmet a bit to get it fitting perfect but its really no big deal.

My helmet is very snug (fnar) so a thick cap won't work for me, but I can use a Buff.
My face and ears get cold, so I pull it on normally to gather around the neck area, draw up the top 15cm or so to cover the lower face and ears, plonk helmet on head, pushing down any spare material to just under the helmet rim, then fasten chinstrap in place over the Buff. This also keeps your jaw and mouth reasonably warm.

If you're someone whose head primarily gets cold, you can form your Buff into a skullcap. It's very thin material so it'll fit inside most people's helmets.

If you get really cold all over your head, you can buy two, and do both!

Are these skull cap type things practical? They seem a bit bulky to fit under a lid...

I have a merino skullcap which I wear most days except in the height of summer - I find it prevents helmet hair

In winter that's not warm enough (I like warm ears!) so I pull my buff up over my ears too, and look like I'm out to rob a bank.

In the depths of winter I add a merino possum beanie.

My helmet copes with all these simply by adjusting the back slider thingy. I have a Specialized hemet.
