Coast 2 Coast St Bees to Whitley Bay

Hello, In August my self and 3 collegues from the school where we work are doing the coast 2 coast, does anybody know if there are any good youth hostels along the route, or just off the route? Also we all ride MTB's and cant decide what tyres to go with? any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

I did the route Whitehaven-Sunderland on my MTB, just left my big knobbles on and was fine. But there was nothing along the route that could not have been handled by slick tyres with good puncture protection.

Personally I would go for semi-slicks or decent treaded rather than knobblies.
No need to make it even harder an it is already - mind all the broken glass in Whitley Bay tho
