Clunking sound when I set off. Happens for

the first 5 or 6 turns, feels as though the chain is slipping out of gear, ( I think). Any ideas? Thanks.

Freehub most likely Wally. The freehub is the ratchet mechanism on your rear wheel. (sorry if i'm stating the obvious)
It can come and go, but maybe better to let your LBS have a look (unless you're capable yourself ?)

Took it into Evans last week, they said it was needed a 'gear service'. They done this for £25, still no better. Thanks gbb, you can't be too obvious with me, I know nothing, but sounds like it's coming from pedal/chain area, as opposed to rear wheel.

Worn chain and sprockets? I know my chain plus front and rear sprockets are all worn .. this sometimes causes the chain to skip over the sprockets making a horrible noise when I start moving or try to accelerate hard and resulting in me not going anywhere. I'll be replacing it all soon.

That sounds a bit like mine, L-C. Surprised they didn't pick up on this in the shop. Also got little clicks on each turn of the pedal, don't know if it's related.

I think you should be claiming this back if it hasn't fixed anything - pointless them doing a 'gear service' (wtf is that???) if they don't even address the problem you took it in for.

I'd have expected them to notice bad wear of chain / sprockets .. so maybe it's not that?

I had a very similar problem on my hybrid last year. Replaced chain & sprockets but problem persisted. It was the freehub as suggested by gbb. Changed that & it's been fine since

Well, my chain and sprockets are getting sorted this weekend so I hope that'll be me done. My chain is skipping about all over the show now. I must stop leaving things to the last minute ..
