I have just begun cycling on a regular basis. My knees aren't able to take running anymore and I am finding that I should have taken up cycling a long time ago because I am enjoying it so much. During this time of year, Maryland (United States) is starting to cool down, mornings are about 40-50 degrees F (4-10 C I believe) Anyway, I am finding that I in the morning when I am riding about mile 5 I am heated up and a little warm. By the time I am done with my ride, I am sweating. Is there clothing that cyclist prefer for cooler/cold weather? I am not looking to make a fashion statement, but I would like to be comfortable and at the sametime a little streamline. I know I could look for endless hours online, but perhaps someone could point me in a direction to start looking. Thank you all. I am planning on riding during the winter months so any advice will be very welcomed.

Thanks!

I believe that a base layer is the starting point. As a fellow runner you must have already invested in summer/winter base layers. I'm using the same for cycling. It will keep you warm but not wet from sweating and for me, that's half the job done.
Now for the rest, I apply the "onion method" which is simply applying layers according to weather demands, from short sleeve jersey with arm warmers, to long sleeve jersey, to windproof jacket or waterproof jacket.. Same with bottoms I would say! I also wear a beanie under my helmet when the weather is cold and change my glasses to a lighter lense (or transparent if it's darker)..
But, yeah, depends on the person really..

What would you wear if you were running in similar temperatures?

Thank you for the response. When I ran I actually wore running shorts and a light fleece when I was cold. It seems I heat up pretty fast when I am running and not so much when I am biking. I know, it's a different sort of exercise, but basically heading toward the same result. I guess feeling the wind at a higher rate through me off and after yesterdays ride it would seem I need to apply the same basic method as you mentioned. I just wanted to ask, being a new rider I will continue to ask the "simple" questions LOL....

I know it's mostly common sense, but everyone has their trade secrets as it were, that seem to help them and from the responses I can make my own. Thanks again.

Heat Gear for the summer and Cold Gear for the winter. The original that every other base layer is trying to emulate......

I do like the Under Armour clothing line. I have a few of the Heat Gear shirts and didn't even think about the Cold Gear. I used the Heat Gear for the Tough Mudder events. Awesome I will check all these suggestions out, everyone has been very helpful and I appreciate it.
