Clicking Spokes

Ok the spokes on my rear wheel are making a clicking noise. I think it's the non-drive side ones and if you use your hand you can make them move against each other which is what, I assume is making the clicking noise. Last night I tightened all (so as not to get a buckle) the non drive spokes by half a turn and this helped for a while but now it's returned so do I:

1. Tighten them another half a turn (you can still move them by hand)
2. Put a drop of oil on the crossing points
3. Both the above
4. None of the above, take it to my LBS for a rebuild.

Or any other ideas?

No harm in trying the oil/grease on the crossing points method before investing more serious time/money in to other options.

You are always going to able to move them against each other at the crossing points to some degree however tight you get them.
The problem with a half turn round all round on one side is that you put the dishing slightly off.
You can make a dishing stick from a bit of cardboard or plywood if you don't have one, I can send you a photo of mine if you need a pattern.

As to what you should do with it.... depends on what sort of wheel, especially how many spokes, and also whether you are able to tighten the drive side some more to compensate for any tightening of the NDS. If it's a conventional 32 or 36 spoker, most of them are not built tight enough anyway so it's worth a go. If it's some stupid light 24 spoke job then I'd be wary of interfering.

I don't think I'll tighten them anymore. I'll try a bit of oil on them later and see if that works., it's just an annoying noise.

And I'd never ride a 24!! 32 is my minmum!

You said oil on crossing points, not at the rim. You'd need to remove tyres and rim tape.

True I did. But I also put a drop of oil where the nipple comes through the rim. Didn't make any difference but I didn't take the tyre off or anything.

Anyway hopefully lbs has sorted it, personally I think at least a couple of new spokes will be involved
