Clicking BB #2

Thought id post separately to the other clicky BB thread on here

Basically on my hybrid ive noticed a click or metal on metal tap noise that happens when im pedalling under heavy load. It happens roughly at the point where either pedal is pushed most of the way down (ie. the 4-5pm position on right side, 8pm from left). So if i try to push up a hill out of the saddle its clicking with every pedal stroke, some clicking when accelerating hard but nothing the majority of the time.

Ive derailled the train onto the inside and the BB spins freely, i can throw it for several rotations so doesnt seem to have any friction problems or make any noise. I also cant feel any lateral movement in the cranks, it looks fine. Ive also checked the area for cracks and all looks fine.

One thing i have noticed is that the frame (Giant Roam) is quite flexible (alu), when i stand still at say traffic light and lift my weight on and off the right pedal you can see the lower part of the frame flex and if i really squeeze the rear brake the seat stays flex. At the weekend i tried my friends Specialized Crosstrail (virtually same bike) and i make the frame flex just as badly both with my weight and on the brakes. So im edging towards thinking im putting quite a lot of strain on the components by being a big bugger at >120kg with rather strong legs from running(and squats) and a relatively low cadence.

Anyway, the noise sounds exactly like every other unknown bike metallic noise, I wondered if the flex could be causing the chain to tap the deraillieur, but its the same in different gears (so long as theyre high enough to grind). Should I be alright leaving it until it starts to sound like crap or could it seize? According to the spec sheets its a Shimano UN26 which costs £6 and has done over 2500 miles.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Have you checked that the pedals are tight?

Personally I'd probably look at servicing/adjusting the pedals initially as I've found they are often a cause of odd noises apparently from the bottom bracket area.

Sometimes a click or tap can come from an unexpected source such as a shoelace tapping the crank or a gear cable end twanging against the frame as your foot goes past (took me ages to track down these).

I would agree on the pedals. My SPD m520s were the source of the irritating clicking I thought was coming from the bottom bracket area....

Thank you clever people

Just got back from a nice 20 miler around woburn listening to the clicky noises. After some analysis (wiggling things), there appears to be slight movement in the pedals which makes the clicky noise. I cant 100% say which part of the pedals, but it looks like the metal cage moves independantly of the center part only by a couple of mm though and takes a lot of effort by hand. Its possible it could be the whole pedal moving/creaking on the axle/bearings. Definitely isnt the join to the crank though.

These arent the same model but i think the black cagey bit is clicking against the silver bit somehow http://www.wiggle.co.uk/wellgo-lu-950-alloy-flat-pedals/

I guess the plan would be to check the screws and replace the pedals when i cant put up with the clicking any longer

Cheers
