I was talking to a mate of mine who advised me to get cleats ( I use normal trainers and straps at present).
He was adamant that using cleats makes a bit difference power wise, once you get used to them.
( mainly not falling off when you stop).
My question is : I am on a limited budget so how much would it cost to get cleat pedals and cleat cycling shoes, without breaking the bank?
All answers are welcomed.

Can't get shoes from Aldi as they start at size 8 and I am size7.

Sports Direct do cheap shoes which may just last long enough for you to see if you get along with clipless before buying a decent pair - Don't expect them to last though.

I like the look of the M520 for under £20 on Amazon. May be worth a try.
I use the M520's myself and like them alot. They are double sided which means there's no faffing about flipping pedals over. The disadvantage is though that you can't really wear normal trainers for a quick spin down to shops.

It isn't really clear on the amazon page I looked at whether or not the cleats are included with the pedals for the £18.99.
You might be better ordering from Decathlon http://www.decathlon.co.uk/m-520-pedals-black-id_3169982.html

I would say the only advantage with cleats is in climbing or sprinting performance wise , your overall times wont improve and to be honest on longer runs ( 50-100) cleats will be a disadvantage as you cant move your feet to allow other parts of muscles to take the strain, the biggest disadvantage I found is in recovery times when using cleats compared to not wearing cleats( constant leg strain compared to zero leg strain) .

I do like the feeling of being clipped in compared to straps and with a stiff sole it spreads the load better so no sore feet which you can sometimes get with straps and a soft soled shoe.

Hope i didnt put you off too much.

Just as a tip from a newbie.. Try some nylon toe clips first.. at under a fiver its worth it, thats what I did and it gave me a bit of an insight to cleats..
