Went out for a ride today on this fine sunny day. When I got to half way and stopped for a drink, I unclipped my left foot as normal but had to twist my right heel by over 90 degrees to unclip. Then heading off again, I couldn't clip the left shoe back in. Is it a problem with the cleats or pedals.

is the cleat loose? could it be that the cleat is rotating as you twist out?

I had a similar problem. I had lost 1 cleat bolt from SPD cleat. The cleat stayed in the pedal as my foot twisted round. I had to remove my shoe and then the pedal to get cleat out. I took of the cleat and lucking I have these on my MTB so I could ride home with only 1 foot clipped in. I now have bolts secured with thread lock.

I've had a similar problem today. Riding through a muddy puddle, the size of a small lake (4m wide x about 5m), I was almost through when the mud underneath just got deeper and I had to put both feet down in the water and mud.

I then found out that my MTB shoes are waterproof (ish).

From then on it was difficult to clip in and out.

To the extent that I had by first proper 'clipless moment'. Bugger, it did hurt a bit for a while!

All this was caused by a load of gritty mud in the cleats and on the pedals.

This 'lake' has been there since our last rains about 3 weeks ago. Everywhere else has dried up.

Hey ho, it's a crap forecast for the next week so it will only get bigger and deeper.
