So I have finally gone over to SPD-SL shoes and pedals after a year of cycling with spd's. I went with the yellow cleats which I think have a 9 degree float. I didn't realise just how much float 9 degrees was until I tried them out last night. Seemed extremely loose and slippy at the rear of the pedal. I will increase the tightness to see if that helps .
Anyway my question really, relates to my dodgy right knee. Heard mixed opinions on this matter but......am I better having more float or less/no float to keep my knee in good shape. Personally as a rider I definitely prefer to have less movement on my shoe but before I go and order different cleats I thought I had better get some opinions first. Any help greatly appreciated

Stick with the float as it puts less stress on the knee.

You'll not notice the float after a while anywat and your feet find the natural position.

Ditto the above.

You can tighten up and reduce some of that slipperiness. I didn't know there were yellow cleats. I ride red cleats and I thought they were 9%. I thought black was no float and grey, 4.5%... but whatever.

I personally wouldn't ride black because I'd be fearful it'd stuff my knees up. I find the float allows me to move my feet sufficiently just for change of position/comfort purposes whilst riding. I have the tension set tight enough to stop my feet moving freely but they will with a small degree of force, yet not too tight to make unclipping a battle.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
FYI
Shimano Cleats SPD/SL = red - fixed, blue - 2*, yellow - 6*, (according to Wiggle).
Look Keo Cleats = black - fixed, grey - 4.5*, red - 9* (Wiggle again)

So no yellow cleats if you ride Look, only Shimano SPD/SL
