I have spd m545 mountain bike pedals.

How do I adjust the cleats on my shoes to reflect the natural feet position. At the moment they are set straight, how do I change this so that my feet are pointing slightly outwards.

Thanks

Sit on a table with the edge behind your knee. Let your lower legs dangle and note the natural angle of your feet from straight ahead. This the angle you need when cycling. Slacken the cleat bolts and turn your shoe to the correct angle whilst holding the cleat. You could get someone to hold a board beneath your feet as you dangle them over the table edge and draw around your feet.

I have found limited scope for angle adjustment with SPD cleats, so you may have problems if your feet converge or diverge too much.

My right foot goes off at almost a 30 degree angle, the left one, only 10 degrees. I can't actually get the cleat to angle enough so I'm stuck with either the scorn of my fellow riders for not using clipless pedals or knee problems. Any one any ideas on the best course to take here?

You should visit a good lbs and try different pedals and cleats. For instance, I understand Speedplay pedals have a wide range of lateral adjustment.
