I have noticed a lot of grit etc in the front mech what is the best way of cleaning this without stripping it down?

Wash thoroughly in the tears of virgins (may be difficult to source in Luton) before lightly polishing with extract of unicorn horn.

Failing that, wot he said...... baby wipes and a final wipe with an oily rag.

Would dragon’s blood be an acceptable substitute for the tears of virgins, i'm in Reading and there's been a bit of a shortage lately.?

I am in Luton, more dragons than Virgins. I tried the baby wipes but I couldn't get into the springs etc. I don't like the idea of spraying de-greaser so close to the bottom bracket. Otherwise it would be gunk & toothbrush. Don't like leaving it as grit & lube equal grinding paste

GT85 and a toothbrush. Use an old rag as a "shield" around the area you are spraying to make sure none gets on the rims/discs. I prefer this to any solvents as it'll lightly lubricate your dérailleur. If you keep on top of it then normally the force from the spray will be enough to remove any grit etc.

As @HovR said above.
If you keep on top of the cleaning, a toothbrush is not even needed, I normally manage with just spraying the GT85 through its straw if muddy canal dirt is not involved.
