Hi,

I have this ten speed, I rode it for a while last year until I broke the rear wheel going round a barrier (caught the wheel on the barrier and it folded)

Just got it going again for countryside commuting/touring with new wheels, tubes and tyres, luggage rack, saddle bags and mudguards.

I just got these new alloy 27" x 1 1/4" wheels off ebay (cheap ones) I also ordered a set/pair of 27" x 1/4" tyres and tubes, They are Nutrac tyres and tubes and both labelled 27 x 1 1/4, When I unpacked the tubes I was surprised how small they were and when I look at the old ones they are 27" x 1 3/8" x 1 5/8"

I tried the tubes on the new wheels and am not satisfied, I have to inflate the tube to over 65 psi to get any kind of support (meaning I cant inflate the tyre at the roadside incase of a puncture) and the tyre is bulging off the rim over about an 8" area near the valve.

is this the right tube? Where am I going wrong?

some pics.

Just ran up the wheel with the bike mounted on my bench, it seems the wheel is out of round, even with no tyre on, the wheel shakes the bike up and down violently at higher rpm,

Edit, it seems the hub is bent around the base of the thread for the freewheel.

27 x 1 1/4 (32-630) would have been regarded as the normal size for such a machine in the 70s/80s, even if they had to be pumped up by hand, to board hard (as Cycling Proficiency instructors used to say.) It has to be conceded that track pumps with gauges do give a very impressive result, but even today, even with narrower tyres, I have succeeded in getting a satisfactory pressure in the field, after a puncture, using the old fashioned long pumps.

The bulge is presumably due to the faulty wheels. Possibly if the rim is not hooked this might contribute. I assume that you have actually bought a rim with 630 bead diameter, not 622.

Cannot imagine why anyone should put 27 x 1 3/8 x 1 5/8 on such a bicycle. Used 27 x 1 for a period, and still use 27 x 1 1/8 on my bike for outings rather than errands.

Sorry about the wheels. It looks like a quality bike and therefore deserves some decent wheels. Love those forks, that crown is tasty! Do you know what make the bike is?

May be a silly idea but that is a big valve for a 1 1/4 rim and tube. Are you sure you haven't got the edge of the valve / tube trapped under the tyre bead ?

Agree with Sidevalve - that tyre is not seated correctly. 27 x 1 1/4"
was a common size and 26 x 1 3/8th was a common size. Not seen any 27 x 1 3/8th? If tyres and tubes match then they should be ok.

I'm not sure about the tire bulging, but I'd expect to be pumping those tires up a fair bit over 65psi anyway. My 27x1 1/4 tires are supposed to go up to around 85. I'd recommend a new (on bike) pump such as the Topeak Road Morph. It can pump up to 100psi without too much effort.
