Is it possible to use a Galaxy 3 smart phone with the strava app installed and a bog standard chest strap transmitter from a heart rate monitor? If so what software do I need to download? Any better ideas?
At present I cannot afford to buy the wahoo-tickr-hrm.
Many thanks

Is it not Android 4.3 upwards to use these apps..

I've got the S4 which I have used in the past with a bog standard Lidl chest strap and hooked up with Runtastic..

Very cheap watch and monitors sometimes use custom wireless protocol, so no guarantee it will work

Everything decent is typically ANT+ or Bluetooth.

To use ANT+ your phone has to be one of the few phones that support it “out of the box”, or you can get an ANT+ dongle (if one exists for your phone).

Typically people use a Bluetooth heartrate monitor with a phone. Just need to confirm both support the correct versions of Bluetooth. Typically this is the low power Bluetooth4.0.

I have the original Wahoo Blue heartrate monitor. I think it’s great.

I’m not recommending the below but a bit of googling brought this back for £21

Yep your right, Android 4.3 upwards which the S3 does ( just I feel ) but couldn't get the thing to work using your method, after a lot of swearing, inwardly of course her in doors does not like foul language, I went to my local aldi and found a Bluetooth HRM reduced to under £13 and that worked perfectly. BUT beware the battery was naff and I couldn't get the thing to work using the crane app. Thankfully it worked with the strava app once I found where to switch it on.
Thanks for the help.....

Thanks for the reply , after your response I did searches on ebay and found the same model cheaper, I ordered one then found a Bluetooth HRM in Aldi which won me over.
Thanks for the help....

I was going to suggest Aldi strap. It works fine. My battery died quickly, but it's been fine since I replaced it. You can get 10 batteries for a pound at www.7dayshop.com.

BT is better than Ant+, IMHO. There is some 2 way communication with Ant+, which means the strap can only sync with one app at a time. With BT, once you have paired the phone any apps can see the strap, even at the same time.
