I swore once unto myself never to use these words within my general and commonplace vernacular, but they now compose 50 percent of my verbal and written output.

I feel like winston smith after he's been conditioned and all sort of warm and gooey once I've said them now.

It's not just me. It seems that everyone from children to grannies is at it now, and in my heart of hearts I know that it is ultimately worse than swearing or using the word 'nice'.

(If anyone deems it necessary to reply, then keep it on topic and about those *two words only*, and don't derail it with other words you feel fit this category. It really is very simple.)

I've actually started using the word chap, as I've noticed a lot of people have. I guess that's OK because it's a synonym of 'mate'.

Chap was a new one to me recently, sounded strange. But after hearing it a few times from the same lad it sort of settled in.

my main beef with 'mate' is that I've always felt it could be said a bit too sarcastically or insincerely like 'pal'.

If a 10 years ago a friend someone called me 'mate', then I would have smelt a rat.

'Cheers' is just plain wrong because it reflects our over-drinky society.
