ANyone reliable able to recommend a decent but cheap BMX for my 9 year old son? For Christamas.

He's decided he wants one, we think it'll be good for him to have a bike for fun, not too interested in quality, just don't want it to be too heavy or whatever will limit his learning on it.

Ta.

Mongoose - decent bikes, don't know what price though.

I think so but they tend to be small and normal. Different makes seem to be slightly different sizes, so you might need to try him on one. a 110cm kid would ride the same one as a 160cm kid. Trial bikes are exactly the same only slight geometry and stem and bar differences make one more rideable than another.

I had a mongoose.
Seemed allright at the time.

No I can't really help you with what to look for. I looked at a few before I went down the Trials bike route and the Mongoose just had better componentry, brakes etc. Some of £110 bikes looked like they wouldn't last.

So my kids got Trails bikes and their neighbours got BMX mongeese (Mongoose's (sp)). The Mongeese got a right hammering and seemed to last well and handled really well on the ramped stuntparks they went to.

Beyond that my knowledge ends.

BTW, I find the full size Mongooses to be on the heavy side and geared too high. Whether the smaller framed ones are any better, I don't know.

Thanks.

Not sure about the frame myself. Not sure how much the weight matters - not like it'll get raced. For £150 I'd imagine it would be a bit on the heavy side.

Gears can be changed.
