This has made me think: i've 2 of the same type - a Met Stradvarius.

Reason ive 2 was a good mate gave us one : which was a pretty good gesture (didnt need it).

Though I had a 'whacking' in the 1 I use all the time for riding.

And ive realised that ive had them now for upto 4 yrs which makes me think:

How often should you change a helmet - do they lose there ''strength after time...should one replace every year just to beon the safe side ??????

Saying that: the Giro Monza/Atmos (£'s willing) is interesting me as ive always wanted a Giro!

If it gets knocked its replaced straight away. But generally i replace every year anyway. Tend to get a few knocks off-raod :?

Yes but, road riders hardly ever crash.

Mine has hit the ground, with my head strapped inside it, a couple of times and I'm still using it. Yes, I know it's stupid and I really should buy another one.

True. Arguably none of the advantages and all of the disadvantages. But I suspect you're in good company.

I'm pretty sure you're meant to replace it every 2 years as the polystyrene degrades over time. However that could just be marketing speak.

I always make a point of replacing mine every year when my annual bonus comes through though.

Does anyone have any 'scientific' info on just how long a helmet should last? Mine is about 4 years old, and starting to look a bit tatty.

Not sure on cycling helmets as I don't wear one unless I have to, i.e. racing; then I make do with what I've got. Not ideal, but we won't go into the pros/cons of helmets as there's enough threads on that subject. But, I climb, industrial and leisure, and work supply new helmets every year (although officially I think they are guarenteed for two) as they break down with UV. Obviously, if we have a knock or find anything wrong with it during our pre-use checks then they are also swapped immediately. I would assume that the cycling helmets would be similar.

Hmm...I bought mine in the sale and it's an 06 model...that would mean I have to replace it with hardly wearing it!
