Folks,

Following advice received on this forum (I posted a thread about taking road bikes off road) I am looking at buying a tourer - either a Dawes Horizon, Dawes Audux or Ridgeback Horizon.

The ridgeback for example comes with 25cc tyres as standard, would it be possible to fit a 23cc or 28cc tyre for example on the same wheel?
I appreciate I'm not going to be able to put 35cc on (if I wanted to) but is there some flexibility in the tyre size or would I have to buy new wheels too to accomodate 23cc & 28cc?

Thanks.

P.S. If anyone has any comments on the 3 bikes mentioned I would be gratefull to hear them.

23c would be fine, not sure about 28.

23mm tyres would fit, as would 28's, but 23's would not be that suitable for touring really as you can't get much weight on them due to the size. I run 25's on my Audax and 28's on my galaxy with no problem. The difference in rolling resistance between 23's and 25mill tyres is neglible.

No - you'll have to take the other tyre off first.

I like to be helpful.

(The rim with a 28 should be fine, clearance with the fork/guards may be a problem - I dunno)

A chap at work has a Dawes Horizon and it looks to have quite wide tyres on it - I'd guess at least 32mm.

He does around 22 miles a day commuting on it and it seems to be there most days. It's not the most glamorous of bikes (it's not something you'd aspire to), but seems adequately kitted out and appears to be standing up to the miles without falling apart.

I have 28's on my Galaxy...I used to have 32's...I am thinking of going to 25's...I think for touring on good quality roads like in france the 25's would probably be ok....the 28's got my down Germany and France so they work perfectly and I had a heavy four pannier camping load...and I am a BIG bloke.

I'm not sure what you mean by off-road. Hopefully we're talking smooth untechnical trails. If you're going to take this bike over bumpy ground then you'll be wanting the widest tyres you can get. Perhaps even a treaded cyclo cross tyre.

The ridgeback and the Dawes Audax aren't really what I would class as touring bikes (I know they're both advertised as touring bikes). I view them more as fast audax bikes than touring bikes. They're deisgned to cover short/medium distances quickly carrying only light loads.

For off-road use I would more inclinded to have a pure touring bike or cyclocross bike rather than an audax bike.

Have you thought about a 29ner MTB?
All the off-road ability of a MTB or by switching to slick tyres you'd get something that will skip along like a hybrid / tourer on the road.

I've gone from 28 Conti Gators to 25 Schwalbe M+ on my Galaxy and it copes fine with a heavy pannier or two.
