Hi,

First of all would like to say hi, been lurking around a while here and learned loads, certainly helped me get back into cycling.

I want to ask a question regarding my wifes bike. Now that I am out a fair bit on bike she has decided she wants to join me lol. She currently has a basic mountain bike which is very heavy and knobbly tyres. Money dictates it would be too much to change to something lighter and more suited to tow paths and cycle paths so just looking to replace tyres for now.

The wheel size on her bike is 26", running 26 X 1.95. I was browsing Halfords site to get an idea of price and came across two tyres. I just wanted to get your opinion on them and suggest if I would need to replace the inner tube if going for slimmer tyre.

Schwalbe City Jet

Many thanks in advance

Go to your LBS, they'll have the same, or similar for about 20% less, I expect. I paid less than 30 pound for cityjets and tubes...

There's plenty of choice if you look around.

These Michelin ones from CRC online look good value (and good reviews too). The narrower the tyre, the less rolling resistance, but larger tyres have more shock-absorbing air, so you pays your money etc.

A given size inner tube will fit a range of tyre sizes. I changed my tubes for smaller valume ones when I put slicks on my mountain bike, but you may not have to. It depends on what width tyre you buy and the size of your existing inner tubes (have a look to see what's printed on them).

Welcome, BTW :hello:

Many thanks for the replies,

I will check out local lbs during the week when leaving my own bike in for service.

I like the look of those Michelins though, and I'm sure I could find a few other bits for myself to buy whilst there lol.

Thanks again

I run the City Jets on my commuter and they're a great tyre for the price a good trade off between comfort and speed. Had only a couple of visits from the "youknowwhat fairy" in the last couple of years.

Good thing about the City Jets is if you currently running a 1.95" tyre you probably won't have to change the inner tube. As Siadwell mentioned check the writing on them. If it says 1.5 - 2.0 or 2.5 you'll be fine with what you currently have.

I've got Double Fighters, I like them. I still wanted to keep some off-road ability and the Double Fighters do allow this with the knobbles on the sidewalls. They're not great at cornering on a gravelly, broken surface but they're not meant for that. I've not tried them in soft mud either, again I think they'd be a bit pants and you'd need a full MTB tyre.

If I wanted to drop the off-road completely I'd have fitted City Jets. Those Michelins look good though.
