Both cranks need to come off.

When using the crank puller make sure (a) you don't cross thread it and (b) you screw it in tightly.

To avoid blood spillage, put the chain onto the big ring, so that when the spanner slips, the sharp bits are covered.

You may need to secure the BB tool to the BB using the crank bolt and big washer. It's likely the BB is English thread, with a left hand thread on the right (fixed) cup. The way I remember it is that the spanner moves towards the front of the bike for either side.

Penetrating oil and patience are your friends. I just removed the BB on my Dawes to regrease. It was only 4 months old and yet I could not move the drive side of the BB. I tried extensions on the spanner, clamping the BB in a vice and turning the bike but ot would not budge, 36hrs of soaking with simple penetrating oil and it came off with very little effort.

Tim's advice on the "hand thread on the right.. " is spot on. Both sides loosen by rotating to the front.

Good luck
