i'm currently racing on a 10 speed 105 groupset. what if any difference would i notice on an upgrade to 11 speed ultegra dura ace etc. aside from having a greater spread of gears, is there a weight difference? is sram or campag lighter? i'm in the progress of putting an upgrade plan together for winter time to my supersix.

There is a weight saving, but the main difference for me, from 5700 to 6800, was the ease and speed of shifting. So much smoother and crisper on the Ultegra 11 speed. 105 11 speed compared to 10 speed may well give you the same gain, albeit without the couple of hundred gram saving.

If you're looking for a racing benefit, then there won't be one. In terms of an upgrade, you'll get one exrta gear and you may save a bit of weight.

As above but also the braking is much better than the old 105. I have also tried 105 11 speed, but if you can go the extra £200 Ultegra has it. The Campag Athena silver groupset looks so pretty on my mates Ti bike, but I don't know how smooth it is compared to Shimano.

Having tried both, I am interested in your opinion on the difference between 5800 and 6800. In what way is the Ultegra better in use on the 11 speed?

I have Ultegra 6800 on my Spesh Roubaix and I put 105 5800 on my Ti bike. I found the Ultegra just that bit crisper and smoother on gear changes and better braking. Having said that the differences are not as great as that between the old 105 (that I had originally on the Spesh) and the new 105.

Personally I wouldn't do it until the kit needed replacing.

If bunch racing, there is a weight benefit and having an extra gear, you can use a tighter cassette meaning you are less likely to be caught in between, however on the flip side, there is a massive increase in repair and replacement costs when you deck it. Unless you are pretty good, or just have money to throw at it, I wouldn't bother, as the repair costs will vastly outweigh any performance gain for the average mid-week evening, cat 3/4 crit racer.

The repair costs of individual items aren't huge, the performance gain is zero, the weight benefit will be undetectable and the 'extra gear' thing is over-stated, IMO. Apart from that, it's well worth doing...

The cost of decking your DA equipped bike as a result of someone diving into a gap that doesn't exist, while riding round your local carbon graveyard (i.e. crit course) could be substantial. Race what you can afford to replace.

If it were me, the groupset would be one of the last things I'd be looking at for a performance gain unless I were tricking out a hill climb bike.

Not planning to upgrade winter bike yet, but 5800 was my plan. Might be 6800 now, from your reply.

The components being anodised rather than painted is also reason enough.

Have already replaced the Tektro brakes with 5800 and can confirm the braking is a huge difference!
