Is it too far gone or should i fix it up to new?

Ive got no idea how old it is or anything, every search for the bike comes up with recumbrents !

Typical 1980s sub-Raleigh mass market stuff. I understand your angst when you say you couldn't bear to see it die, but I think I'd find it hard to find the enthusiasm to even wipe it with an oily rag.

It all depends on what you want or should I say what your willing to spend on it. Reynolds it may not be but that doesn't mean you can't make a useful hack out of it. I certainly would have saved it but then again I now have a shed full of spares so could probably make it run able without spending too much.

What sort of money are we talking, i would strip it right back and respray it, then a set of wheels, nowt flash, new brake cables and bartape,

If i took the gear levers off, what would i do with the holes ?

Hate to say it, but it reminds me of the old joke about asking the way of a yokel, whose answer starts, 'well, if I was going there, I wouldn't start from here'.

@Angry Blonde if going repaint route it aint worth doing unless great sentimental value , give it a clean and some new bar tape , cables and tyres and either turn it into a fixie or single speed it , how rusty are the rims ?

Canny rusty like, its got no sentimental worth to me, i just thought i could prolong its life haha !

It's the challenge of restoring something which other people may think is past it.
I think a lot of it would clean up with a good going over with T cut. In the end it is up to you what you do with it . You could look back at it with a sense of pride and think I restored that or you could think ugh! I wasted a lot of time and energy on that!
