A "normal" chainring/crankset will have any where between 45 to 53 teeth on the large ring, 38/43 on the smaller/inner ring and if you have a granny ring20/30. A compact crankset will normally have a 50 on the large and a 34 on the inner. No granny ring. A compact will help you if you have a double chainset, ie Two rings and live in a hilly area. It gives you a lower gear range so easier going up hills but not quite as fast on the flat.
