chainline problem

hello, I changed the gearing on my bike from original 9 speed road bike setup to flat bars with MTB cogs at back with MTB shifters. I now can only use the lowest geared 3 cogs before the chainline goes wrong. I then have to shift up to the middle chainwheel which can only mange 2 or 3 cogs again. Can anyone help.... ?

Sounds like the cable tension is all to cock. Have a look at this video:

Isn't the pull ratio on mtb shifters different to road bike shifters? So unless you've changed the derailleur too you'll be knackered.

Do you know what series each one is. Some pull ratios were altered depending on year.

PS you have attached the cable the right side of the bolt on the rear mech ?

I just checked the cassette and it is actually a Sun Tour (model not marked)...could this be the cause ? I remember I did check before buying and must have read it was compatible...was I mislead ?

If it's on a Shimano compatible free hub the cassette should be fine. Cassette and gear lever are both 9 speed, I hope? And rear MTB and road mechs have the same pull ratio, at least for 9 speed or less.
