chain widths

ooops bought a 10 speed chain for a 9 speed mtb, it doesnt work obviously, not so clever on the chainrings. i have an 8 speed chain in the garage is that going to be too wide where as the 10 speed is too narrow?

Yes I'm afraid so. 5, 6, 7 and 8 speed all use the same chains (usually - there are some narrow 8 speed chains out there) but 9 and 10 speed chains won't fit anything else.

9 speed chains will fit 5/6/7/8 speed systems. They are all 3/32" chains (internal width between the chains' side plates). 9 speed chains are simply marginally narrower externally, and usually don't last as long. Some think a 9 speed chain will fall and jam between lower speed chainrings, the fact is they all can, but won't when used correctly in a properly adjusted system.
